When Erin was in fourth grade, in order to
play in the school band, she had to choose an instrument that she
wanted to learn to play. Erin first chose the tuba, but it was a
little too heavy for the four foot tall fourth grader. Her next choice
was
the trombone, but her arms were just too short. She finally decided on
the
trumpet because it wasn't too heavy and it wasn't too long, and at the
time,
three valves seemed a lot easier to play than any of the other
instruments. Erin has been playing the trumpet ever since then.
While in the
Intermediate School, she performed her first solo at a concert with
piano accompaniment. As an 8th grader, Erin was involved with the
Shelton High School Marching Gaels. (The marching band.) Shelton
High
occasionally selects a handful of eighth graders that are allowed to
play
in the high school marching band. Erin was one of those lucky few and
enjoyed
every minute of it. As a junior, Erin was chosen to be one of the
Drum
Majors along with Jonathan Blanck (who attends Western CT State
College).
Erin studied trumpet with Lou Pluchino during high school. "I would not
be the same musician I am now if it weren't for the lessons I had with
Lou every week." Erin has a great amount of respect for Lou and
has realized that
she couldn't have gotten this far without him.
Currently
she is a junior attending Western Connecticut State University with the
goal of having a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. Erin is
involved in the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Brass, and the
Jazz Orchestra at Western. Along with these performing groups, she
takes trumpet lessons from Rich Clymer, the trumpet instructor at the
college.
Over the past three years, Erin has
taught trumpet lessons to children
over the summer. She also plays Taps for the Veterans of Shelton on
Memorial
Day, Veterans Day and sometimes Fireman's Day. She also plays with a
brass
quintet at the Unitarian Church of Westport for some holidays and has
been
a member of the Stratford Community Concert Band for four years.
